Gregg DeMey 0:06
Good Morning, Friends and Welcome to Elmhurst CRC’s Daily Dose of the Word of God.
It’s Thursday 9/10, and this is Gregg DeMey. Today we’ll be reading from Genesis 9:8-17,
And digging into the resolution of one of the Great Salvation Stories of the OT, Noah and the Great Flood.
Gregg DeMey 0:26
Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him: “I now establish my covenant with you and with your descendants after you and with every living creature that was with you—the birds, the livestock and all the wild animals, all those that came out of the ark with you—every living creature on earth. I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be destroyed by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth.”
And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life. Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.” So God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant I have established between me and all life on the earth.”
Gregg DeMey 1:45
At the heart of the Good News of God’s Love is this word: Covenant. God is a Covenant making and Covenant keeping God. It’s a rare word, Covenant. Most of life operates according to a different C word: Contracts. You do this, I’ll do that. You scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours. Quid pro quo, y’know! If God gave as good as He got, we’ll all be doomed. But God makes Covenants. He promises, “I’ll be Your God, you be my people.” I’m not going to destroy you. Never will I leave you or forsake you. Surely I will be with always, even to the end of the age as Jesus said. Wow! Thank GOD that He keeps his promises. God keeps Covenant. God, thanks you that it is in your Heart to restore and redeem, to forgive. Thank you for the fresh start that you gave to Noah and his family - thank you for the fresh start that you give to us in Jesus. And thank you for the sign of the Rainbow - a sure sign that you’re going to keep you Word and love us ‘til the end. We’re trusting that in Jesus!
