Welcome to Elmhurst CRC’s Daily Dose of the Word of God. It’s Tuesday, January 20. We are putting the spotlight on Jesus, and with the Apostle John as our guide. This is Billy Heschl still reading for Rachel Klooster in 2026. Today’s reading is from John 3:1-4

Rachel Klooster  0:28

Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus who was a member of the Jewish ruling council. He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him.” Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.” “How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!”

Rachel Klooster  1:04

Nicodemus was curious about Jesus. So curious that he decided to go to him in person to ask some questions, even though doing so was going against his Pharisee ways. Which is why he went to Jesus at night, under cover of darkness, so he would not be seen by his fellow Pharisees. I can picture Nicodemus comparing what he has learned his whole life in Jewish school about God and the coming messiah, to the things he was seeing play out right in front of him. And he had some questions! This makes me wonder about how I approach my reading of these stories in the Bible. Having heard many of them many times before, it can be easy to just read and move on. But do I have a curiosity like Nicodemus did? Can I take what I’ve read before in the Bible and use it to have curiosity about other parts that I’m reading? The Bible proves itself over and over again, in how consistent it is and in how all the pieces fit together. So I’d like to remind myself today to be intentional and courious when approaching the Bible.

Let’s Pray. Thank you, Lord, that your Word is consistent. Thank you that we can be curious and ask questions. We pray that you would show yourself to us when we come to you with curiosity. In Jesus Name, Amen.
