Welcome to Elmhurst CRC’s Daily Dose of the Word of God. It’s Wednesday, January 7th. Today’s reading is from John 2: 6-10 with the spotlight on Jesus, and with the Apostle John as our guide.

Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.” They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”

In this passage from John’s Gospel, we learn about Jesus’ first miracle at the wedding at Cana. This is a sign which reveals Jesus’ divine powe and glory. The servants were told by Jesus to fill 6 jars with water. In faith and obedience, they filled them to the brim. In turn, Jesus turned 120-180 gallons of water into wine. Amazing! Jesus turned a moment of deflation and scarcity into a moment of abundant grace, celebration and hope. The 6 jars held water which were used for religious ritual and spiritual purifications. And now Jesus is using the sign of the water into wine to send the Gospel message of Saving and amazing grace! One Christian author writes: “Christ is in the business of giving abundantly out of his glorious storehouse and his desire is for us to be prepared by faith to receive them - no half jars of water would do!” Praise God for this first sign and miracle recorded in the Gospel of John! May we say yes when Jesus asks us to do something.

Let's pray. Holy and way maker, God. Thank you so much for the gift of your Son, Jesus Christ. With Jesus, the best is yet to come. We will never regret saying yes to you, our Savior and master teacher, Jesus. Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.
