Kelly Day 0:06
Welcome to Elmhurst CRC's Daily Dose of the Word of God. It's January 6. Today's reading is from John 2, verses 1 through 5.
Kelly Day 0:17
On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.” “Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
Kelly Day 0:49
I rarely enjoy this little Mother-Son interaction in John. Maybe it's because I have a few grown sons, but I can picture how this might have gone down. They're all at this friend's wedding, having a great time and a problem occurs. Mary is trying to help her friend and goes to her son for help. Jesus' response of, "My time has not yet come," is so intriguing. Was Mary asking for a miracle? Was she pushing him to start his next steps of mission, or just a simple request of help? If Jesus didn't think this was its time to begin, why does he choose to in the next few verses?
Kelly Day 1:35
I wish I knew more, but I see Mary as a parent and as a believer in Jesus as Lord - she has confidence in him. I don't know what she expected to happen, but she trusted Jesus enough to tell the servants to do anything he asked. Mary's belief and confidence in her son Jesus helped set off his ministry of miracles, truth, teaching and salvation. Do we trust and have confidence in Jesus like Mary did? Do we turn to him when things go sideways in life? Are we willing to do anything he says because we believe that He is our Lord and Savior? One of my prayers for this new year is to have less confidence in me and more in Christ Jesus. Let's believe what we say, that he is the king of kings, the Lord of all, Savior born to us.
Kelly Day 2:37
Dear Lord our God, we thank you for walking this earth and living as one of us so that we can learn from you. I pray that our belief, confidence and trust in you will grow this New Year. May we look to you every day for direction, guidance and joy. In Jesus name, amen.
