Good morning and welcome to Elmhurst CRC's Daily Dose of the Word of God. It's Thursday, December 18th - only seven days left till Christmas! This is Gregg DeMay, Lead Pastor at the church. We are walking through the Bible, reading today from John 1, verse 14.

Gregg DeMey 0:22

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only Son who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

When God speaks, things happen. In the beginning, God said, "Let there be light!" And there was light. God said the word and sun, moon and stars burst into being. God said,"oceans and dry land," and ginkgo trees, fish and all of it came to exist. The apostle John picks up on this at the beginning of his gospel. "In the beginning was the Word," is how John begins. And then this incredible surprise, the word that the that was there at the beginning, "the Word became flesh." God spoke his own self into creation, into physical creation. It's as if an author could write themselves into the very pages of their own book. Of course, we can't do that humanly speaking, but that's what God accomplished, putting himself in his own creatio and own story.

There are lots of amazing ways to describe Jesus, but John 1: 14 is perhaps the most amazing to me, that Jesus came from the Father, full of grace and truth - 100% grace, 100% truth. It's so hard to be 100% graceful and truthful at the same time. Say your spouse or a friend asks you how they look in a particularly ill-fitting sweater, what do you say? Can you be 100% honest and gracious at the same time? Or a friend makes you dinner and it's not that great. Then they ask the question, "How did you like it?" What do you say? This illustrates just how wise and worthy Jesus is. Situation after situation, encounter after encounter, 100% grace, 100% truth, all the way from the manger to the cross. He was 100% human like you and me. That's the truth. Baby Jesus, 100% divine - God's gift of grace for our healing and redemption.

Gregg DeMey 2:58

Let's pray. Oh God, help us today to express the grace and truth that you've given us in our actions, words and conduct. For Jesus' sake, amen.
