Welcome to Elmhurst CRC’s Daily Dose of the Word of God. This is Jason Turner. It’s Wednesday, DECEMBER 17th. As we continue through the Bible this year, today’s reading is from John 1: 6-13, so that we can better see the Big Picture of how God has been and IS STILL at work for good in the world.

Jason Turner 0:30

There was a man sent from God whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through Him all might believe. He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through Him, the world did not recognize Him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive Him. Yet to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in HIS name, HE gave the right to become children of God -- children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

Jason Turner 1:23

The word light is mentioned 4 times in this passage. I think God wants us to pay attention to this theme. When we think of the essentials of human life, what comes to mind? There are 4 essentials to life: air, water, food and light. In the very beginning, God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.” The Bible teaches us that Jesus is the Light of the World & Light of Life. Jesus has everything we need. Wow! Just like John the Baptist, we are called as believers to bear witness to the saving light of Christ. He is the Son of God who takes away the sins of the world. The nation of Israel was blinded to its own Messiah. Who do we know who hasn’t experienced the light and love of our Savior and Shepherd Jesus Christ?

Let's pray. Loving and life giving, God. Thank you for creating and being the light, light that allows us to live on Earth, but more importantly, the saving light of Christ that enters the heart of every believer. Open the eyes of our hearts so that we may truly see and live. Amen and have a great day.
