Jeff, welcome to Elmhurst CRC's Daily Dose of the Word of God. It's Monday, December 8th. This is Jeff Klein reminding you that your faith isn't just for Sunday, but for the rest of the week also.
Jeff Klein 0:19
During the time Jesus called his first disciples, the sea was thought of as an evil and dark place with its ever shifting surface and no possible place to stand. The sea symbolized a fallen world and the eternal abyss hell. But in spite of this, fishermen went bravely into it every day to catch fish. So when Jesus came along and asked some of those fishermen to follow him and begin a different vocation, the way he asked, and what he inferred by how he asked didn't escape them. "Come, and I will make you fishers of men." In essence, when Jesus called them fishers, his implication was clear: you'll still be fishing (so you'll be out to the sea) and even though it won't be for catfish and tilapia, the seas people live in are equally as dangerous.
Jeff Klein 1:11
Is the call of those first disciples any different than ours today? Catching people requires going out on dangerous seas. Why aren't we so often on the shore? As we approach Christmas, do you know anyone who needs to hear the real message of Christmas this year? Did you know that people are more open to the Gospel at Christmas than at any other time of the year? Is there someone you could personally invite to Behold the Lamb of God, the live nativity or at Christmas Eve services here at ECRC? We are now the fishers for people. Let's get out there and try to catch some fish.
Jeff Klein 1:49
Let's pray. Jesus, when you called us to be fishers of people, you call this Lord to be the ones who go out and help people understand who you are, why you came and what this means for their lives. Lord, I pray that as we listen to this little broadcast that you bring to mind someone who we need to approach and invite into some kind of situation where they might hear the Gospel this Christmas. Thank you Jesus for inviting us to join you in the work you're doing in the world. In your name we pray, amen.
