Welcome to Elmhurst CRC’s Daily Dose of the Word of God. This is Jason Turner. It’s Wednesday, December 3rd. As we continue through the Bible this year, today’s reading is from Ezekiel 37: 4-10, so that we can better see the Big Picture of how God has been and IS STILL at work for good in the world.

Then he said to me, “Prophesy over these bones, and say to them, O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord. Thus says the Lord God to these bones: Behold, I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live. And I will lay sinews upon you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live, and you shall know that I am the Lord.” So I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I prophesied, there was a sound, and behold, a rattling, and the bones came together, bone to its bone. And I looked, and behold, there were sinews on them, and flesh had come upon them, and skin had covered them. But there was no breath in them. Then he said to me, “Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and say to the breath, Thus says the Lord God: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe on these slain, that they may live.” So I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived and stood on their feet, an exceedingly great army.

Ezekiel had already prophesied to forests and mountains in previous chapters. Now he’s being commanded to prophesy to dead bones. -Thankfully, Ezekiel following his marching orders from the Lord, believed the promise and obeyed the command. The bones came together. And the bodies formed. Only one thing was missing from the bodies: LIFE. Ezekiel continued to do what God commanded by prophesying to the wind or breath. Now a dead army became a living Army. Thanks to the breath from God that Ezekiel prophesied to!

Let's pray holy and gracious God, your Word tells us in John chapter six, verse 63 of the New Testament: the Spirit gives life. The flesh counts for nothing The words I have spoken to you, they are full of spirit and life. Help us to move from spiritual death to new life. In Jesus Christ, may we receive the life giving power of your spirit as the Living Word proclaims. Amen. Have a great day!
