Welcome to Elmhurst CRC’s Daily Dose of the Word of God. It’s Friday, November 21, and Sunday is coming. I’m Erin Pacheco.

Today’s reading is from John 14. This is part of Jesus’ story right before he is betrayed and crucified. It’s his last night with his friends. They know he will leave them soon and the air is thick with worry.
And I love the way Jesus ministers to their troubled hearts – and ours – with these words. The verse is pretty short and straightforward so I’m going to read it a few times, each followed by a moment of silence, as a way to help us listen deeply to Jesus. Here is John 14:27. This first time, listen for a word or phrase that sticks out to you:
Erin Pacheco 1:10
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. Hold that word or phrase before God in a moment of silence.
Erin Pacheco 1:45
I’ll read the verse a second time. Listen for what Jesus might be saying to you today through these words?
Erin Pacheco 1:49
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. Lastly, as you listen to Jesus’ words again, ask the Holy Spirit to show you how you can respond to what you have heard.
Erin Pacheco 2:29
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. May we rest in this truth today.
Erin Pacheco 2:59
Let’s pray. Thank you, Jesus, for speaking to us through your word. We ask for your peace, which transcends all human understanding, to settle down deep in our souls. May we live differently from the world — free from fear — because we know that our rock solid foundation is in you. Amen.
