Welcome to Elmhurst CRC's Daily Dose of the Word of God. It's Tuesday, November 18, and I'm Kara Hackert. Today's reading is from Jeremiah 29, verses 1 and 4 through 6. As we journey through the Bible this year, we can better see the big picture of how God has been and is still at work for good in the world. Today's reading: a letter to the exiles. This is the text of the letter that the prophet Jeremiah sent from Jerusalem to the surviving elders among the exiles and to the priests, the prophets and all the other people Nebuchadnezzar had carried in exile from Jerusalem to Babylon.

It said, This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says to all those that carry an exile from Jerusalem to Babylon. 'Build houses and settle down, plant gardens and eat what they produce, marry and have sons and daughters. Find wives for your sons and give your daughters in marriage, so that they too may have sons and daughters. Increase the number there, do not decrease.'

I read in the Zondervan NIV commentary that Jeremiah's letter was written to the 3000 Jews who had been exiled to Babylon. God promised that he would bring them home, but they had to wait in Jerusalem. Jeremiah heard that some exiled false prophets were predicting an early fall of Babylon and an early restoration of the exiles to Judah. Jeremiah's letter warned the exiles against this deception and urged them to wait patiently for God's time. Let's read that last line again - Jeremiah urged them to wait patiently for God's time. This can be so hard trusting in God's timing and God's will. So often I think I know what's best and want to rush ahead. What an amazing reminder that God knows what is best. He has a plan, and we can trust that his timing is perfect.

Let's pray together. Dear Heavenly Father, we thank you for your wisdom and plan. Please help us to put our trust and faith in you and your timing. Please guide us on this journey that you have for us, and help us to follow your leading. You will bring us home. Amen.
