Welcome to Elmhurst CRC's Daily Dose of the Word of God. It's Monday, November 17. This is Jeff Klein reminding you to take your faith outside of the church building and live it where you live, work and play.

I read the other day about something farmers do during a blizzard. When you're living out in the middle of nowhere, it ups the danger quotient of a blizzard significantly (especially in the Midwest). The open spaces allow the snow to whip up and blow in ways it doesn't in the city. Winds can come up fiercely and quickly, creating a white-out situation where you can't even recognize any landmarks that are like right in front of your face. Farmers often have to head out in blizzards to tend the animals that aren't able to find their way back home. Some farmers have even died just feet from their home unable to see through the gusts to get back inside. So, farmers will tie a rope to the house when they head out. They keep hold of it and it guides them back home. A lot of people's lives can feel full to the point of overflowing. Work and family demands leads us to be tense, worried, frantic, fatigued and starved for time. Sometimes life even stirs up some other kinds of challenges and troubles. You might call it a life-Blizzard, but where's the rope? Those of us who call ourselves Christians know where the rope is. We know how to get steady during a life blizzard. We know where to turn. I wonder how many people don't know how to find their way out of a life-blizzard. Do you know anyone who needs you to throw them the rope or show them how to find it? Jesus said that we should come to him when we feel burdened or weighed down by life and he would give us rest. To anyone who comes, he'd give rest. So, let's be people who throw the rope to others as we meet them during the week.

Let's pray. Lord Jesus, help us not just to hold onto the rope for ourselves. Jesus, show us people who need us to throw them the rope, to show them the rope that leads to life. In your name Jesus we pray, amen.
