Good morning and welcome to Elmhurst CRC's Daily Dose of the Word of God. It's Thursday, November 13 and this is Gregg DeMey. We are walking through the Bible, reading today from Isaiah chapter 9, verses 6 and 7.

Gregg DeMey 0:19

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given,  and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,     Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.

Friends, it can often feel to us like the world is a dark and messy place - especially with the recent government shutdown and the state of American politics - but it's always been that way. I think for ancient Israelites it was probably even worse in isaiah's time. Notice that God's solution to our darkness and societal strife is to send a child as a sign of hope, potential and future. But God's child is no ordinary kid. This child is also known as Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. The government will be on this kid's shoulders and he will establish justice and righteousness. It is always God's way (his mysterious way) to start small. It's like planting a seed in the ground to let his goodness grow and flourish from there. Through Jesus, Christ's spirit can get inside and grow into the rest of us. God's government isn't going to come with a political takeover or a majority vote - justice and righteousness come from the bottom up. When person by person, we welcome the Spirit of Jesus Christ and let him grow within us. That's what God is eager for - to let his love be grown and shown in us, and the zeal of the Lord will accomplish it.

Gregg DeMey  2:33

Let's pray. Oh God, we welcome your child into our hearts again today. Into our midst, community and your church. Lead us, guide us and govern us in such a way that we will be empowered today to do righteous things in the right way and time. In Jesus name, amen.
