Welcome to Elmhurst CRC’s Daily Dose of the Word of God. This is Jason Turner. It’s Wednesday, NOVEMBER 5. As we journey through the Bible this year, today’s reading is from Amos 5: 14-15, NIV translation, so that we can better see the Big Picture of how God has been and is still at work for good in the world.

Seek good, not evil, that you may live. Then the Lord God Almighty will be with you, just as you say HE is. Hate evil, love good; maintain justice in the courts. Perhaps the Lord God Almighty will have mercy on the remnant of Joseph.

In the Army, Soldiers are trained to “hunt the good” as a way to be more resilient. No matter how stressful and enduring a field training or deployment can be, there’s at least one good moment, story or victory we can claim. It's a new outlook and a return to focusing on what’s most important - living with meaning and purpose. A return to living with our internal spiritual compass. Amos was bringing a heavy message to Northern Kingdom of Israel. Amos warned God’s people of tough times to come - God’s judgment was coming for the people who rebelled against God, who broke their covenant with him. God’s people would be punished. He would preserve a remnant of people who would turn from their sinful ways and worship him. The passage from today says that the Lord God Almighty will have MERCY on the remnant of Joseph. Mercy is not getting what we deserve.

Lamentations 3: 22-23 teaches us: The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning. Thank the Lord for his mercy! May we not take it for granted. Do we say God is with us, get caught up in religious activities at church, yet we don’t pursue righteousness and justice God’s way? How can we say we love God, claim to love the good and yet we don’t hate what is evil? Check out Proverbs 6: 16-19 to learn about some things that God hates. Let’s grow to love what God loves: his one and only son Jesus Christ, people, acts of service, cheerful givers, a humble heart and obedience just to name a few.

Let's pray. Holy and merciful God, help us to be faithful Jesus followers in a hurting, rebellious and sinful world such as ours. May we grow to love what you love and hate what you hate, all for your glory. Amen.
