I still play hockey twice a week with a bunch of guys. It's just ball hockey, but it's a great workout. We really mix it up running around a gym Tuesdays and Thursdays during lunch. Most of these guys are not followers of Jesus but most of them also know that I am a pastor. This doesn't affect our relationship - they like me because I'm a good hockey player and this makes me an insider in their world. Because I'm an insider, I get to have lots of conversations with these guys. A lot of them are just guys joking around afterwards in the locker room. But sometimes it gets more serious, like last week, when I started talking to one of the younger guys, John. He told me that he grew up as a Jehovah's Witness. I had another recent conversation where Dave told me that he really doesn't know what he believes about God.
Jeff Klein 1:11
Where are you an insider? God actually modeled this for us when the Word of God came in the flesh and moved into the neighborhood - Jesus became an insider. He lived among us and experienced all the things we experience. A big part of being on the mission of God is about being in intentional relationship with those who believe differently, putting ourselves in a position to enter into people's lives when the opportunity arrives, but that begins by being aware of the people God puts around us when we move around as insiders. It could be a sports contest sideline or a place at work where you are an expert - or somewhere you just like to hang out. Figure out where you can be an insider, then enter in and see what kinds of spiritual conversations arise as you hang out there with those folks.
Jeff Klein 2:04
Let's pray. Jesus, teach us how to follow your example, how to move into the neighborhoods around us and to become insiders with our neighbors, our friends, our co workers and our acquaintances so that we can have meaningful conversations about what life's really all about. In your name, Jesus, we pray. Amen.
