Good morning and welcome to Elmhurst CRC's Daily Dose of the Word of God. It's Thursday, October 23 and this is Gregg DeMey, Lead Pastor at the church. We are walking through the Bible, reading today from 1 Kings, chapter 8, verses 6 through 13.

Gregg DeMey  0:24

The priests then brought the ark of the Lord’s covenant to its place in the inner sanctuary of the temple, the Most Holy Place, and put it beneath the wings of the cherubim. The cherubim spread their wings over the place of the ark and overshadowed the ark and its carrying poles. These poles were so long that their ends could be seen from the Holy Place in front of the inner sanctuary, but not from outside the Holy Place; and they are still there today. There was nothing in the ark except the two stone tablets that Moses had placed in it at Horeb, where the Lord made a covenant with the Israelites after they came out of Egypt.  When the priests withdrew from the Holy Place, the cloud filled the temple of the Lord. And the priests could not perform their service because of the cloud, for the glory of the Lord filled his temple.  Then Solomon said, “The Lord has said that he would dwell in a dark cloud; I have indeed built a magnificent temple for you, a place for you to dwell forever.”

Gregg DeMey 1:30

in the midst of 1 Kings 8 - which contains a lot of details about the building of Solomon's temple and then the process and pageantry of dedicating that temple - there is an incredible scene. The glory of the Lord falls on the temple like a cloud. Awe and wonder are heavy in the air. Priests couldn't even do their work or serve because the presence of God was so thick and real. Now, lest we think that there was something magical about Solomon's temple. Just a few verses later Solomon prays, "But will God really dwell on earth? The heavens, even the highest heaven cannot contain you. How much this temple that I have built, O Lord?" What God's Spirit made manifest in the temple on that dedication day has now been set loose, blowing freely through every corner of the kingdom. God's glory is not confined to a mere building, but it is the church itself and amazingly, within us who are chosen, called and filled with the Spirit.

Gregg DeMey 2:48

O Lord, we pray come Holy Spirit, as you once filled that temple in Jerusalem. Come Holy Spirit in our hearts, in your church, in all the earth. We pray, come Holy Spirit.
