Good Morning and Welcome to Elmhurst CRC's Daily Dose of the Word of God. It's Thursday, October 16 and this is Gregg DeMay. We are walking through the Bible and today we're reading from Psalm 51 verses 10 through 14.

Gregg DeMey  0:21

Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. Then I will teach transgressors your ways, so that sinners will turn back to you. Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God,     you who are God my Savior, and my tongue will sing of your righteousness.

Psalm 51 was written by King David of Israel. David who, though he was chosen by God and full of God's Spirit, also found king-sized ways to sin. Psalm 51 was written after the most ugly and egregious example of David doing his own thing, and not God's thing, which included stealing another man's wife, committing adultery and murder as a bundle of brokenness. How could this be? Earlier this week, we heard God's perspective expressed in 1 Samuel 16, where God says, "The Lord doesn't look at the things people look at. People look at outward appearances, but the Lord looks at the heart." Which is why Samuel chose David and not his older brothers, who were taller, stronger and better looking. Later in Scripture, God also says, "I have found David, son of Jesse, a man after my own heart. He will do everything I want him to do." So, which is it? David, king of sinners, or David chosen to be king of Israel based on his heart for the Lord?Yes, both of those things. Maybe today you can see a little glimpse of David when you look in the mirror. I know I can.

Let's pray. Oh God, I know that I am both a sinner and saved by your amazing grace. Thank you for forgiving me for the wrongs I've done. Forgive me for where I don't know I'm going wrong and create in me a clean heart. Give me more of your Holy Spirit and give me joy in the gift of salvation - that's what I want to share and talk about today. In Jesus name, amen.
