Welcome to Elmhurst CRC’s Daily Dose of the Word of God. This is Jason Turner. It’s Wednesday, October 8th. As we journey through the Bible this year, today’s reading is from 1 Samuel 3: 8-14, NIV translation, so that we can better see the big picture of how God has been and is still at work for good in the world.
Jason Turner 0:33
A third time the Lord called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; You called me.” Then Eli realized that the Lord was calling the boy. So Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if He calls you, say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place. The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.” And the Lord said to Samuel: “See, I am about to do something in Israel that will make the ears of everyone who hears about it tingle. At that time I will carry out against Eli everything I spoke against his family -- from beginning to end. For I told him that I would judge his family forever because of the sin he knew about; his sons blasphemed God, and he failed to restrain them. Therefore I swore to the house of Eli, ‘The guilt of Eli’s house will never be atoned for by sacrifice or offering.’”
Jason Turner 1:43
In this passage, Samuel thinks Eli is calling him three times. Samuel fails to recognize God's voice. Thankfully, Eli provides wise counsel to Samuel and helps him realize that God is calling him. Samuel follows Eli's instruction and goes to his resting place to wait on God's call. On the fourth time that Samuel answers God's call, God gave him a message of judgment to Eli regarding his family. God would continue to reveal his word to his people through the prophet Samuel.

Let's Pray. Holy and patient God, help us to respond to your call in our lives, not confusing your voice with others. Yours is the voice of truth above all others and the name above every other name. Through Jesus Christ, our good shepherd and savior, amen.
