Welcome to Elmhurst CRC's Daily Dose of the Word of God. It's September 23. Today's reading is from Exodus 3, 1 through 6. As we journey through the Bible this year, so that we can better see the big picture of how God has been and is still at work for good in the world. Before I read our passage today, I want to give a bit of background on Moses. Most of us remember he was the Hebrew baby found in the river and raised by the Pharaoh's daughter. One day as an adult, he saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew. Moses killed the Egyptian and then had to flee for his life. Moses landed in the town of Midian, where he built a new life as an ordinary man.

Exodus three

Kelly Day  0:55

Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up. So Moses thought, “I will go over and see this strange sight—why the bush does not burn up.”  When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, “Moses! Moses!”  And Moses said, “Here I am.”  “Do not come any closer,” God said. “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.” Then he said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.” At this, Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at God.

Moses is just going about his regular tasks and sees this burning bush that doesn't burn up. The fiery Bush ends up holding the angel of the Lord and God calls Moses by his name.I 'm not sure if I was Moses, if I would come closer or take it as my cue to run the other way. Moses doesn't just stay, but he responds to God, "here I am." Then God gives Moses his family line of who he (God) is. I found this interesting but not surprising since lineage was such a big part of the Old Testament times. It was like God was saying to Moses, "you know the stories of your ancestors - Abraham, Isaac and Jacob - and the promises I made to them and how trustworthy I am. Now I'm going to need you to trust me for the next portion of this family tree's story." God has a history of being trustworthy. It's something he wanted Moses to cling to and I believe it's something he desires us to cling to today. He's the same God of Abraham, Moses, David, Jesus and us today. Will we also choose to stay and listen to God our Father and say, "Here I am. Use me, even if I'm afraid."

Let's pray. Dear God our Father, God of these amazing true stories from the Bible, we thank you for the reminders of the past so we can trust you in the future. I confess sometimes I feel like running the other way and not seeing the big picture. I pray that we as your children will be filled with the Holy Spirit and that we'd be willing servants to your plans with a prayer of, "here I am. Use me." Amen. You
