Welcome to Elmhurst CRC's, Daily Dose of the Word of God. It's Tuesday, September 16th. I'm Kara Hackert. Today's reading is from Genesis 27, verses 1 through 4 - the beginning of the story of Jacob taking Esau's blessing. As we journey through the Bible this year, we can better see the big picture of how God has been and is still at work for good in the world. Let's read our story from our favorite Children's Bible, The Children's Bible in 365 stories. We're reading the story entitled The story of the Birthright - Jacob's trick.

Isaac was old by now and his eyesight was very poor. He took to his bed because he thought that he would soon die. Then he called Esau. "You are my first born son," He said. "I must give you my blessing before I die. Go out and hunt deer to make me the venison stew that I love. When I have eaten it, I will bless you." Esau took his bow and arrow and set off, but Rebecca had overheard them. If Jacob, her favorite, was to be head of the family, he should be receiving the special blessing. Instead of leading God to work out his own plans for the boys, she thought out a scheme to trick Isaac and snatch the blessing from Esau. "Go and kill two goats in the flock," she urged Jacob, "and I'll make a stew so good that your father won't know it isn't Esau's. You shall pretend to be Esau and take it to him, and then we'll see who gets the blessing." Jacob was afraid that the trick would be discovered. His father would never mistake him for Esau, even though he couldn't see. But Rebecca had an answer. Quickly, she cooked the meat, then wrapped the skins from the goats around Jacob's neck and arm so that he would feel as hairy as Esau. Then she dressed him in his brother's clothes, which smelled of the fields in the woods, and sent him into his father carrying the tasty stew.

Let's pray together. Dear Heavenly Father, we know that you have a plan for our lives, but it's not always easy for us to have patience and to wait for your timing. Please help us to trust you and to follow your way. We know that you love us and keep your promises. Thank you for including us in your family and for working through flawed people like we all are. Amen.
