Daily Dose of the Word of God - Beyond Sunday Ep. 96
Jeff Klein, Pastor of Outreach
Jeff Klein 0:07
Welcome to Elmhurst CRC's Daily Dose of the Word of God. It's Monday, September 15. This is Jeff Klein with your reminder to take your faith Beyond Sunday and into the week. The call of the Christian faith is to follow Jesus.
Jeff Klein 0:22
Following Jesus implies more than just believing stuff about Jesus, knowing some theological truths or being able to recite catechisms or creeds. Following Jesus includes being with him, abiding in him, being meaningfully connected to the source of living water, so that his presence in your life transforms you. Following Jesus also means becoming like Jesus, imitating him, beginning to resemble him, living your life like Jesus would live your life. And finally, following Jesus is learning to do the things Jesus did, like speaking about the good news of the kingdom, lifting up and managing the brokenhearted - making disciples, healing the people you encounter along the way. His disciples learned to do all these things and more by moving in his power and his presence. The weird thing today is that being a Christian has become more defined by raising your hand to say, "I'm a Christian! I prayed the prayer! I'm a good church-person." More than it is about doing the same stuff Jesus did for us to be the life changing, world transforming Church that Jesus intended. We need more people doing what Jesus did. We need to get beyond Bible studies for Bible studies sake. We need to get beyond thinking of church as the place we gather. Instead, each of us needs to figure out what Jesus has for us to do and then we need to get going. What can you do this week to do the stuff that Jesus did?
Jeff Klein 1:53
Let's pray. Lord Jesus, help us to practice your way. Help us to follow you. Help us to learn to do the things you did. In your name Jesus we pray, amen.
