Welcome to Elmhurst CRC's Daily Dose of the Word of God. This is Kyle Olson and I serve here as the Technical Director. I'll be reading from The Voice translation of John chapter 21 verses 15 through 17. This is a short conversation between Jesus and Simon Peter.

Kyle Olson 0:29

They finished eating breakfast. Jesus: Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these other things?  Simon Peter: Yes, Lord. You know that I love You. Jesus: Take care of My lambs. Jesus asked him a second time. Jesus: Simon, son of John, do you love Me?  Simon Peter: Yes, Lord. You must surely know that I love You. Jesus: Shepherd My sheep.  (for the third time) Simon, son of John, do you love Me? Peter was hurt because He asked him the same question a third time, “Do you love Me?” Simon Peter: Lord, You know everything! You know that I love You. Jesus: Look after My sheep.

Let's pray. Lord, thank You for Your word. Thank you for these conversations between Jesus and his disciples. They sound so real and profound that it feels like we're right there when you ask Simon Peter three times if he loves you - we can not only feel the tension and the hurt from Peter's perspective, but we feel the love and care and concern in the asking. And when you tell him to take care of your lambs, it is such a deep, profound request. Not only do we need to be able to identify your lambs, understand how to take care of them, what they need and what we can give, yet we don't even know if we have the power to do so. But Lord, we can be reassured that if you asked it of us, it's possible you've given us the spirit and strength to accomplish these things in small and mighty ways to further your kingdom. And we thank you for that opportunity to be a part of your plan.We love you. We really love you, and you know that we love you. In your name, amen.
