Several years ago, Pam and I discovered that here in Chicago, you can go see the Blue Man Group for free if you offer to usher for a performance. We signed up - what a blast! On our night, we arrived early, got trained in our ushering duties, completed our jobs and then got ushered to our own seats (the best in the house) We settled in for an hour and 45 minutes of multi-sensory percussion. It was unlike anything we'd ever seen. We had to agree with the critics, "Blue Man Group was groundbreaking, powerful, fun and stunning." But what we what we weren't prepared for, was the participation. We were part of the act! Standing, dancing and playing volleyball with massive balls was just part of it. And then it hit me: this is what God wants from each one of us. We're never just spectators in God's drama. We're called to be part of the performance, helping to create powerful, ground-breaking and stunning stuff.

Paul wrote this to the Christians in Rome, "And so dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice, the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him." Or Jesus said, "As the Father has sent me, I am sending you." Are you still a spectator? Are you just sitting? Are you just hanging out in church? Well, it's time to get involved in the performance.

Let's pray. Jesus, help us to find our gifts, to find our passions, to find the things you're calling us to do. Help us to join you in your kingdom work and then get out of our seats. To stop being spectators and get in the performance. In Jesus name we pray, amen.
