Daily Dose of the Word of God - Psalm 1
Rachel Klooster & Billy Heschl
Rachel Klooster 0:10
Welcome to Elmhurst CRC’s Daily Dose of the Word of God. It’s Tuesday, January 28, 2025! This is Billy Heschl, still in the new year, reading for Rachel Klooster. We are getting into the Word of God with the Eat This Book series, and this week we are talking about wisdom in the Old Testament. Today's reading comes from Psalm 1.
Rachel Klooster 0:33
Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night. They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither and they prosper in all they do. But not the wicked! They are like worthless chaff, scattered by the wind. They will be condemned at the time of judgment. Sinners will have no place among the godly. For the Lord watches over the path of the godly, but the path of the wicked leads to destruction.
Rachel Klooster 0:34
Let’s hear verse 3 again: They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do.
Rachel Klooster 1:28
I live across the street from a pond in a park. When I look out my front window, I can see the trees planted around it so I can picture vividly a “tree planted along the riverbank” as mentioned in this Psalm. In this current winter season we are in, the trees do not have leaves on them and don’t appear to be prospering. However, we have the hope and promise that come spring, they will begin to bud and eventually produce a bunch of leaves and even some sort seed pod or fruit. Today’s scripture tells us that if we are reading, listening and meditating on God's word,we will be like a thriving tree. Even when we’re in a season where it looks like we aren't thriving - for example during a “winter” season where it looks like our branches are dead and we have no leaves or fruit that can be seen - there is the promise that if we keep taking in the nourishment of God’s word, we will continue to grow and thrive, and eventually flourish and prosper in all we do.
Rachel Klooster 2:36
Let's pray. Lord God, we thank you that you watch over us. We thank you that you promise we will thrive and flourish and prosper, when we depend on you. We thank you that the trees all around us are a reminder of your care for us in each season. Please help us to remember to turn to you when we need wisdom. In Jesus name, Amen.
