Daily Dose of the Word of God - Joshua 1: 8-9
Kelly Day, Director of Coffee Break Bible Study
Kelly Day 0:09
Welcome to Elmhurst CRC's Daily Dose of the Word of God. It's Tuesday, January 14. Today's reading is from Joshua 1, 8 through 9.
Kelly Day 0:20
Keep this book of the law always on your lips. Meditate on it day and night sothat you may be careful to do everything written in it, then you will be prosperous and successful. Have I not commanded you be strong and courageous? Do not be afraid. Do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.
Kelly Day 0:45
Moses had just died and Joshua was his right hand man. God here is talking to Joshua, passing him Moses' baton of leadership. How does God choose to pep talk the new leader of the Israelites? The one who is about to guide them into the promised land that is currently filled with great enemies (and it will take them years to battle). God gives them simple advice: "Keep my words on your lips. Focus on it day and night and you will be prosperous and successful." God repeats the line to be strong and courageous many times in Joshua. They are not to be themselves physically strong and courageous because of the latest self-help book - but because they are relying on God's strength and courage. I believe these verses are meant for us as God's children today. Let's study God's words in the Bible every day. Let's not just read them, but let them alter our thinking and soften our hearts so that we can act as his sons and daughters. We too can be strong and courageous in all we face knowing we have a father in heaven that loves us and His Spirit that lives in us wherever we go.
Kelly Day 2:04
Let's pray. Dear Lord Our Father, you are powerful, strong and worthy of praise. I confess that I often try to live on my own strength and muster up a bit of courage for each new day. Please forgive us for forgetting that you have given us all we need to know in your true word (the Bible) to live a truly prosperous life. I pray that we all commit to a new year of writing your word each day. I ask that you will open our hearts and minds to knowing you betterand following your ways each and every day. Amen.
