Good morning friends and welcome to Elmhurst CRC's Daily Dose of the Word of God. It is Thursday, January 9 (in a new year) and God is inviting us to get more of his word into our hearts and lives. Today's reading takes us back to Exodus chapter 3, verses 11 through 15.

Gregg DeMey 0:28

But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?” And God said, “I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain.” Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?” God said to Moses, “I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am has sent me to you.’” God also said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you.’ “This is my name forever, the name you shall call me from generation to generation.

This week's readings have been about God's revelation of himself to Moses in the burning bush. A desert tree on fire, but not burning up - sounds wondrous! But the most wondrous thing happens when the voice of the Lord speaks to Moses and begins to fill him in on God's own plans. When Moses voices his doubts about going to the great Pharaoh of Egypt, God promises, "I will be with you." Some of us (no doubt) could benefit from receiving that very promise from God today. And when Moses asks about what the name of God is, God answers with the most profound thing that can be put in human language, "I am who I am."

Gregg DeMey 2:19

God is being. God is reality itself. God is saying, "I was the living one before you existed. I am" God is saying, "I am 100% present in your life, even now in this moment. I am." God is saying, "When you shrug off this mortal life and enter into real eternal life, I'm already there. I am." God's unique way of identifying himself is self consciously picked up by Jesus, who, in the book of John, says things like, "I am the light of the world. I am the bread of life. I am the good shepherd. I am the resurrection and the life."

Let's pray. Oh God, we receive and claim your promise that you will be with your people - even us today in our little lives. We thank you that you are the one who was and who is and who is to come the great I AM, the ever-living one. We receive your precious gift of life today and cherish it. We want to share it and pass it on out of gratitude to you in Jesus name, Amen.
