Daily Dose of the Word of God - Haggai 2: 6-9
Rachel Klooster & Billy Heschl
Rachel Klooster 0:10
Welcome to Elmhurst CRC’s Daily Dose of the Word of God. It’s Tuesday, December 10. This is Billy Heschl, as always, reading for Rachel Klooster. If you aren't aware, we're in the season of Advent and today's scripture is from Haggai 2, 6 through 9.
Rachel Klooster 0:29
“This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘In a little while I will once more shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land. I will shake all nations, and what is desired by all nations will come, and I will fill this house with glory,’ says the Lord Almighty. ‘The silver is mine and the gold is mine,’ declares the Lord Almighty. ‘The glory of this present house will be greater than the glory of the former house,’ says the Lord Almighty. ‘And in this place I will grant peace,’ declares the Lord Almighty.”
Rachel Klooster 1:01
Is this referring to a political overthrow? The people under herod must certainly have hoped so! This sounds great - shake all the nations (assumedly all except ours). What is desired by all nations will come (but really what is desired by OUR nation?). The glory of this house will be greater than the glory of the former house. YES! THIS house that WE are a part of! And in this place I will grant peace - even better! But in other parts of the Bible - in Matthew and Luke for example - Jesus says he did not come to bring peace. So, which is it? Did Jesus come to bring peace or not? Well, if we are trying to “make peace” between ourselves and someone we disagree with, that usually involves some sort of compromise. And God does not allow compromise when he’s referring to our devotion to him.
Rachel Klooster 1:57
So I read this as: Jesus came to grant us peace - but HIS sort of peace. A peace from God that asks for a commitment to him in return. This Christmas season as we contemplate the birth of the one who is coming to shake things up, let us contemplate our devotion back to him. And praise him for the peace he will bring!
Rachel Klooster 2:20
Let’s pray. Dear Jesus, thank you for coming to earth to bring us YOUR peace. Thank you for this season of Christmas in which we can remember how you came to be one of us, in order to redeem us and rescue us. In your name, Amen.
