Rachel Klooster  0:09

Welcome to Elmhurst CRC’s Daily Dose of the Word of God. It’s Tuesday, November 19. This is Billy Heschl reading for Rachel Klooster. It’s the season of green and growing things, because God is on a mission to keep us growing Up, In and Out. Listen to Acts 2:1-4 from The Voice translation

Rachel Klooster  0:31

When the holy day of Pentecost came 50 days after Passover, they were gathered together in one place.

Rachel Klooster 0:37

Picture yourself among the disciples: A sound roars from the sky without warning, the roar of a violent wind, and the whole house where you are gathered reverberates with the sound. Then a flame appears, dividing into smaller flames and spreading from one person to the next. All the people present are filled with the Holy Spirit and begin speaking in languages they’ve never spoken, as the Spirit empowers them.

Rachel Klooster  1:03

Our theme this week is Committing. In light of this story, I imagine it would be pretty easy to make a commitment if we heard the roaring wind from heaven, felt the shaking house, and saw the flames. This sensory barrage would force us to take notice of what was happening, we’d have to make a choice to accept that what was going on around us was something special, something unprecedented and something we needed to engage with. It would be amazing if the Holy Spirit came to us that dramatically today. But God has something different in mind. He sends his Holy Spirit to us through other ways: a Bible verse that suddenly hits us differently or through a comment in a devotion. Or, through a word from a friend, a song or a still, small voice. However the voice of the Holy Spirit finds its way to us, let us be open and willing to commit to the instruction that comes along with it. Let us use it as a renewed commitment to follow the way of the Bible, which is not always easy in today’s fast-paced world.

Rachel Klooster  2:08

Let's pray. Holy Spirit, reveal yourself to us. May we be alert and aware to the ways you are speaking to us, and may we follow the path you lay out for us. In Jesus name, amen.
