Welcome to Elmhurst CRC's daily dose of the Word of God. It's Tuesday, October 15. It's a season of green and growing things because God is on a mission to keep us growing up, in and out. Today's reading is from Genesis, 1, 1 through 5.

Kelly Day  0:27

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.

Kelly Day  1:01

If you were to write a book, how would you start it? Would you consider the first few lines to be significant? The Bible, the most influential book of all times, begins with these five verses. We see that God created the heavens and the earth. The Spirit of God is hovering over the waters and then God makes his first statement, "Let there be light." It's easy to breeze over this statement, but when I stop and linger on it, I believe there's more to it. All God has to do is say, "Let there be light," and it is. So it's easy to assume that this light is the sun and moon - but God creates that later in the chapter. This light is different. God sees that the light is good and he separates it from darkness.

Kelly Day  1:56

If we fast forward to the first five verses of the gosepl of John, yet again, we read about light and darkness. John is speaking about Jesus here. "In him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it." Light and dark - could this be a theme God wants us to pick up as we read his true word? In these first few verses of Genesis, we should be wowed by God. We should be able to put all of our trust in our God, who is the creator of heavens and earth. All he has to do is say something, and it is so. And it seems that he had a plan from the very beginning about light being separate from darkness playing out in his son Jesus Christ,  being the light of the world and crushing the darkness.

Kelly Day  2:54

Let's pray. Dear Lord, the Creator of the universe, our all powerful God, the light of the world and our personal Savior, forgive us as we too often live our lives forgetting who you are. Forgive us as we go about life thinking we're in control and it's up to us to save ourselves. Thank you for being our light and for providing physically and spiritually for us. I pray that we could trust in you, in your great power and plans for each of our lives every day. In Jesus name, amen.
