Welcome to Elmhurst CRC's daily dose in the Word of God. This is Jeff Klein. Today is Monday, September the 4th - Happy Labor Day! This Monday's feature is now called Beyond Sundays. It's a chance to think about how you can live out what you've heard in the Word of God beyond Sunday, throughout the week.

Jeff Klein 0:27

When you go boating, navigation is crucial to the journey (ending up where you intended). Think about it, when you get out in the middle of an open body of water and you can no longer see land, the course you've charted - using maps and compasses before you left - is crucial to ending up in the right place. Someone said (that) if you left New New York City on a boat headed for London and you're off 5 degrees in your calculations, you would end up somewhere south of Spain when you hit land.

Life must be a lot like boating; navigation proves to be crucial to ending up in the right place. When it comes to boating, navigation uses tools like maps and compasses, but how do you chart a course through life? There's probably a lot of different methods to use, and all of them will lead you somewhere. I've heard things like "follow the money, follow your heart, do what you want." The Bible seems to be big on hearing God's voice. On that being the crucial source of navigation, looking to him for direction, listening for his instructions, and then obeying them (acting them out doing something with them). So how are you navigating your way through life? Do you think your methods will lead you to the right place? Or, will you find yourself off course when you get there?

Jeff Klein 1:46

I was doing a middle school camp not too long ago, and one of the middle school kids came up to me and pointed out he said, "You know, Jeff, that the words silent and listen are spelled with the same letters." I thought "Wow, this middle school kid is amazing!" Then he said, "You know, that you need to be silent in order to listen." I thought, "brilliant!" I mean, most people think of middle school kids as like kids with small brains, but that little comment got my small brain thinking. "How often do I sit silently and listen for God's instructions? Listen for God's voice? How often do I sit quietly and ask God to give me his direction; seek his navigation? Go after his directions for my life?"

Jeff Klein 2:36

This past Sunday, we talked about building your life on a firm foundation. That foundation was hearing the words of Jesus and obeying them. So this week, my challenge is: maybe you need to sit quietly,  ask God for his instructions and then immediately get up and do something about what you've heard.
