Jeff Klein, Pastor of Outreach

Welcome Elmhurst CRC's, daily dose in the word of God. It's Tuesday, July 12. I'm Jeff Klein, one of the pastors here at the church and I'll be reading from Matthew 6, 31 through 35.

So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Where do you look when you need something? Where do you turn? If you turn to fretting and worrying, it means that you believe that you need to be the source of provision to meet your own needs. When these kinds of worries dominate your thinking, it's really difficult to relate to God and even more difficult to trust him. What does it look like to seek the kingdom of God above all else and to look to God the Father to meet your needs?

My friend from Africa arrived in the States with three kids and nothing but the clothes on his back. He often faced moments of scarcity, like when it looked like there was no way he'd be able to pay his rent or buy food for his family -- let alone get a car and have transportation for work. When I would ask him about his situation, he would always assure me that God is good and he will provide in just the right time. My friend looked up to meet his needs. He knew that God, his father, was the source of his provision.

Most of us can't relate to my friend's situation. We have closets full of clothes, spigots that provide gallons of water and food in our pantries that lasts for months. So, why do we worry? Why do we get caught up in this? When it comes to finances, what makes you worry? Not enough retirement money? Not enough for college? No food? A car too expensive to repair? I don't know, but I can see this: don't look to the wrong place. Look up! The father is ready to meet your needs.
