Good morning friends and welcome to Elmhurst CRC's daily dose of the Word of God. It's Monday, January 24. In the Season of Epiphany, when things get revealed in Sunday is Comin'. This is Gregg DeMey, I serve as Lead Pastor at Elmhurst CRC. And today I'll be reading from Psalm 71.:1-6. "In you, Lord, I have taken refuge. Let me never be put to shame in your righteousness, rescue me and deliver me. Turn your ear to me and save me. Be my rock of refuge to which I can always go, give the command to save me, for you are my rock and my fortress. Deliver me, my God, from the hand of the wicked, from the grasp of those who are evil and cruel. For you have been my hope, Sovereign Lord, my confidence since my youth from birth, I have relied on you and you brought me forth from my mother's womb. I will ever praise you."

Friends, among the things the last few years have demonstrated to me, is this—I need a refuge. I tried to be an independent, healthy, living, healthy, well-functioning adult but I need a refuge. Maybe you do too. Here's the good news. We don't need to find a new one. We don't need to make one up. The refuge that has been protecting and preserving God's people for millennia since the days of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob is still as good as ever. Psalm 71 uses these words for the Lord—a rock, a refuge rescue, fortress, strength, deliverance. All of these are found in our relationship with the Lord. All of these are found in the presence of God. If you have walked with the Lord, for a long time, these forces have been present since youth all the way back to your birth even back into the womb. And Psalm 71 says that this reality is not supposed to promote passivity in us. Rather, it is supposed to inspire our praise. Psalm 71, verse six," I will ever praise you."

 Gregg DeMey  01:17

Friends, let's go to God together in prayer. Dear Lord, today, we will face things that are beyond our human resources to meet the challenge of freely admitting this. I am tempted just to try harder to push forward in my own strength, Lord while allowing me to do all I can today be my rock, my refuge, my fortress, my strength, and deliverance. And if you would allow me to fail a little bit in my weakness so that your strength can shine forth even stronger and brighter. That would be beautiful and would result in praise. Lord, we praise you through Jesus was accomplished everything that we need. Amen.
