Welcome to Elmhurst CRC's daily dose of the Word of God hits Monday, January 10. It's the Season of Epiphany; when things get revealed and Sunday is coming. This is Greg DeMey, I serve as Lead Pastor at Elmhurst CRC, and today I'll be reading from the Gospel of John chapter two verses one through 11. "Now on the third day, a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus' mother was there and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine was gone, Jesus mother said to him, 'They have no more wine.' 'Woman, why do you involve me?' Jesus replied, 'My hour has not yet come.' And his mother said to the nearby servants, 'Do whatever he tells you.' Nearby, stood six stone water jars, the kinds used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from 20 to 30 gallons. And Jesus said to the servants, 'Now fill the jars with water.' So they filled them up to the brim. And then Jesus told them, 'Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet'. And they did so. And the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. And then he called the bridegroom aside and said, 'Everyone brings out the choice wine first, and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink. But you have saved the best until now.'"

What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee, was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory. And as disciples believed in him. Friends, at the beginning of a new year, I find myself more open to change: change seems natural, the year itself can be renewed. Even in the depths of winter, the days are getting longer already and Spring is coming. Maybe I can be renewed too.  As a nation as a global culture, I think we're collectively longing for something to change, or some kind of renewal. Isn't it great that we follow the one who turned water into wine? Certainly that miracle, that sign, as John calls it, did something amazing for the family whose wedding took place in Cana that day, but 2000 years later, we still know and cherish the story in the gospels, because it highlights the work of Jesus who is able to change one thing into another—water into wine. Yes, disaster into celebration sinners into saints.

Let's pray. Lord Jesus 2022 is still young. As this new year begins. Won't you do something new within me too? I have disasters that could be transformed into celebrations. I can't manage this change myself. But I am open to you, Lord. Amen.
