And I said, “This is my fate; the Most High has turned his hand against me.” But then I recall all you have done, O Lord; I remember your wonderful deeds of long ago. They are constantly in my thoughts. I cannot stop thinking about your mighty works.

In our fast-paced world of today, our memories tend to be very short. We barely get a grasp on something before it moves on to the next news cycle. But, over the next few weeks something is happening that has a 17 year memory - the emergence of the 17 year cicadas! Do you remember what you were doing the last time this happened around here? The Klooster family lived in Michigan then, so we are relying on others’ accounts of what it was like to have flying bugs everywhere, with a deafening sound. Soon we will be able to experience for ourselves this “memory” put into the ground 17 years ago, revealing itself in May of 2024.

We hear of others’ accounts of what “wonderful deeds of long ago” the Lord has done, but I hope we can also say to God “I remember your wonderful deeds of long ago. They are constantly in my thoughts. I cannot stop thinking about your mighty works.” This is a reminder today, to remember the mighty works God has done for you. And if you see a cicada or two (or thousand), maybe it will remind you of God’s great providence over all of his creation, and over us.

Let’s pray. Thank you, Lord for the mighty works you’ve done for us. And thank you that right around us (whether we like bugs or not) we can see reminders of how you take care of your creatures, great and small. In Jesus name, amen.
