Kelly Day  0:09

Welcome to Elmhurst CRC's daily dose of the Word of God. It's Tuesday, May 7 and today I'll be reading from Luke 4, 17 through 21.

Kelly Day 0:20

And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written: “The Spirit of the Lord is on me,     because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”

Kelly Day 1:02

Heres Jesus back in his hometown, amongst all the people who have known him since he was a child. What does he choose to say to them? What scripture does Jesus want the people who technically know him best to hear? He chooses these verses. These words are a prophecy about Jesus himself - about what he has come to do. At first glance, it's all about the good news to the poor, freedom for prisoners and sight for the blind - all amazing things that Jesus physically has and will continue to do - but then Jesus says, "Today, the scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing." What does that mean? I wonder if Jesus is saying, "they are the poor, the prisoner and the blind spiritually." Jesus is coming to be their Savior, to release them from their own sin and personal blindness. That day, the scripture was fulfilled from hearing the spirit-filled anointed one, Jesus.

Kelly Day  2:05

How about us today? Do you feel like you know Jesus? Are you satisfied with just the physical healing he can bring? Let's go deeper with Jesus our friend, redeemer and Lord. Let him heal our inner sin and sickness and be set free in Jesus's beautiful plan as a savior of the world.

Kelly Day 2:26

Let's pray. Dear Lord our God, you are the one who designed and created each one of us. You alone have the power to physically and spiritually save us. I pray that we can continually strive to truly know you better through studying your true word and talking to you each day. Thank you for freeing us, that we may joyfully follow you and your name alone. Amen.
