Welcome to Elmhurst CRC’s Daily Dose of the Word of God. Today is May 2.  It’s Friday, and Sunday is coming! I’m Erin Pacheco. I’m thinking today about light. Paul, in 2 Corinthians, talks about the gospel as a light by which we can see the glory of Jesus, who is – even more than we are – the exact image of God. The gospel shows us Jesus, and Jesus shows us the face of God.

Erin Pacheco  0:40

This is 2 Corinthians 4:5-6: “For what we preach is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord. We ourselves are just your servants for Jesus’ sake. For God, who in creation said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.”

Erin Pacheco 1:24

I love those verses. I love the idea that the same God, who spoke light into existence, is also speaking light into our hearts and opening our eyes, so that we can see Jesus more and more and so that we can know God’s glory. And I love the way that Paul invites us to just get out of the way. We’re not out here boasting about ourselves, or preaching our own platform, or making a name for ourselves. We’re just servants of Jesus. Paul goes on to compare us to jars of clay. Ordinary, fragile jars, who are valuable because of what they contain.  In this case, the light of the world.

Erin Pacheco  1:53

Let's pray.God, if you can light up the world with a word.I know you can do it again in me.I give you whatever weakness I'm feeling today.Fill this jar of clay with the power of your lights. May the light of your gospel grow stronger today, in my heart, in my life, in my actions, and in my love for the people around me. Amen.
