Kelly Day: 0:06
Welcome to Elmhurst CRC's daily dose of the Word of God. It's Tuesday September 5th, and Sunday's comin'. This is Kelly Day, Coffee Break Bible Study Director, and this week, we'll be climbing the ladder of faith with an emphasis on the letter F, which signifies our fallenness. Ephesians 2, 1 through 5 from the NIV.
Kelly Day: 0:34
Made alive in Christ. As for you, you were dead in your As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.
Kelly Day: 1:21
Paul is not sugarcoating anything here in these verses. He is writing to Christians, trying to explain why God's grace (through Christ) is so amazing and desperately needed. Before Christ, we too were dead in our transgressions and sins, following the ways of this world and the ruler of the air (Satan). We also gratified the cravings of our flesh and followed our own desires and thoughts. We deserved wrath.
Kelly Day: 1:51
Paul puts all these things into a past-tense because Christ changed everything. His grace alone has saved us. I'm not sure about you, but when I read this list, I still see myself as a fallen human. I still get caught up and follow the ways of the world or try to gratify the cravings of my flesh. I still need God's grace each day.
Kelly Day: 2:16
Let's pray. Dear God, you are the giver of life, physically and spiritually. You are a good, good Father that loves his children despite our fallen nature. I thank you for a new life in Christ. I praise you for your undeserved mercy and grace. Amen.
