Daily Dose of the Word of God - Genesis 3:1-7

Rachel Kloster Season 1 Episode 433

Rachel Kloster, as read by Billy Heschl

Rachel Kloster  0:06

Welcome to Elmhurst, CRCS daily dose of the Word of God. It's Billy Heschl reading for Rachel Kloster and Sunday's coming. This week we'll be climbing the ladder of faith with an emphasis on the letter F this week, which signifies our fallenness. Today's reading is going to be Genesis 3, 1 through 7.

Rachel Kloster  0:28

The Man and Woman Sin. The serpent was the shrewdest of all the wild animals the Lord God had made. One day he asked the woman, “Did God really say you must not eat the fruit from any of the trees in the garden?” “Of course we may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,” the woman replied. “It’s only the fruit from the tree in the middle of the garden that we are not allowed to eat. God said, ‘You must not eat it or even touch it; if you do, you will die.’” “You won’t die!” the serpent replied to the woman. “God knows that your eyes will be opened as soon as you eat it, and you will be like God, knowing both good and evil.” The woman was convinced. She saw that the tree was beautiful and its fruit looked delicious, and she wanted the wisdom it would give her. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it, too. At that moment their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness. So they sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves.

Rachel Kloster 1:35

We notice in chapter 3 that she is just called “the woman” and he is just called “her husband”. The names Adam and Eve have been dropped away, leaving us to wonder if we are supposed to put ourselves in those places in this story. And it’s not just along gender lines, we easily could (and do) play both of those roles on a regular basis. Today’s passage ends on a low note. But we know we are not without hope. Jesus came to cover our shame, to cover our sins, and for that we can be thankful!

Rachel Kloster  2:09

Let's pray. God, our Father, we confess we often twist your words to serve ourselves, and we lead others to do the same. Please forgive us. We thank you Jesus, for providing us a way out of our guilt and shame and for covering for us through your death on the cross. Thank you for loving us enough to not leave us where we are, but for providing a way to be reconciled to you. In Jesus name, Amen.
