Welcome Elmhurst CRC's daily dose in the Word of God. It's Friday, January the 6th. This is Jeff Klein, the Pastor of Outreach here at Elmhurst CRC. Today, I'll be reading from John 14, verses 1 through 6.

Jeff Klein 0:21

Don't let your hearts be troubled, trust in God and trust also in me. There is more than enough room in my father's home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you?  When everything is ready, I will come and get you so that you will always be with me where I am. And you know the way to where I am going. "No, we don't know, Lord," Thomas said. "We have no idea where you're going, so how can we know the way?" Jesus told him, "I am the way, the tuth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me."

When Jesus starts talking about preparing a place in his father's home, the disciples are hearing marriage language. This is exactly how a groom would get ready to marry his bride in those days. The parents would agree on the marriage, and then the groom would go home with his father to build a room for he and his bride under the family home. It wasn't until the father declared that the room was ready that the groom would go and get his bride and the wedding would happen. Jesus is telling his disciples that this is the kind of relationship that he wants to have with them; he wants this kind of intimacy. And when he tells them that they know the way to where he is going, Thomas speaks up and honestly states, "We actually don't know where you're going or the way to get there. We have no idea. So how the heck are we supposed to get there and know the way?"

Jeff Klein  1:38

This is why there's so much confusion about life and so much wondering if there is more to life than what people find themselves pursuing and living. People do not know the way - the real way, the way to real life, the way to the place that God is preparing for anyone who loves him. People are stuck. But Jesus doesn't leave Thomas hanging, he tells him the answer. "I am the way, the truth, and the Life." If you want to find more to life, if you want to find your way to the place being prepared for you - a deep and real encounter and connection with Jesus is the only way, the only truth, and the only path to abundant life as God intended it. Have you had a personal encounter with Jesus? Not with the church, a preacher, catechism, theology, or Christian school, but with Jesus?
