Welcome to Elmhurst CRC's daily dose of the Word of God. It's Friday, June 10, and Sunday's coming. This is Greg DeMey, I serve as Lead Pastor at Elmhurst CRC. And I want to introduce you to a song called "You Are God Alone," that will be included in this Sunday's worship service. Now there is a constant temptation for every human being, which is to make something or someone other than God the center of our lives. If you can imagine a throne from which a monarch is calling the shots of your life, and the monarch sits on that throne, who are what is the name of that king or queen. It could be you yourself; it could be a certain desire or longing that's on the throne. It could be your job, your boss or spouse, or another friend or loved one. It could be comfort, or your cash or your stuff. It could be a sport; there are infinite options for who gets to sit on that throne. But here's the truth. That throne at the center of your life is suited for only one, God and God alone. We may be tempted to put other contenders or pretenders there for a time, but they ultimately don't fit and can't last.

In 2004 Billy and Cindy Foote wrote a song called "You Are God Alone" as a way to remind us of this truth. The song will be featured right before Sunday's sermon. And you can click on a link in the show notes. Listen to it on YouTube or Spotify. Here are just a few of the lyrics. "You are God alone. From before time began. You were on your throne, and you are God alone. And right now in the good times and bad. You are on your throne. You are God alone. You're unchangeable. You're unshakable; you're unstoppable. That's what you are."

John Calvin, 500 years ago, once said this, The human heart is a nonstop factory of idols. Yes, sadly, that's what we're like. Apart from knowing Jesus and our debt of gratitude to him, our hearts, and our idle factories, but knowing Jesus and staying overwhelmed with thanks for the love that he showed us. There's no other way to live except with God on the throne of the universe and on the throne of my life to where you pray with me. Oh God, you are the only one who is worthy to sit on the throne of eternity. Forgive me. When I allow lesser things into the throne room and today out of love. I submit again to you and ask for your sovereign will to be known in my little life to in Jesus name. Amen.
