Welcome to Elmhurst CRC's daily dose of the Word of God. It's Tuesday, March 26, it's the season of lent and we're walking with Jesus. John 13, 1 through 5 - Jesus washes his disciples feet.

Kelly Day 0:24

It was just before the Passover feast. Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his love. The evening meal was in progress and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon, to betray Jesus. Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power and that he had come from God and was returning to God. So he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

Kelly Day 1:12

Jesus was in the upper room, just he and the disciples. He knew this would be the last time that they were all together and wanted to show those who he loved deeply the full extent of his love. How would we typically show our love to someone who we cared about? While I was thinking of my kids, I make sure to tell them that I love them and I show them love by making meals and doing their laundry. I'm willing to sacrifice my time to give them more. So how does Jesus show the full extent of his love? By humbling himself to a position of servant. He is the king of kings with all power and authority, yet he takes off his outer clothing, wraps a towel around his waist, kneels down and washes his disciples feet. One thing that struck me was that we are to assume he washed all the disciples feet - even Judas's!  Jesus knows that within the next hour or so Judas was going to leave and betray him - the devil had already prompted him. But, Jesus swoops down and washes his feet as well. Jesus's heart is probably broken over this, yet he loves him and is willing to serve him just as he does the other disciples.

Kelly Day  2:36

How can Jesus example of true love to those around him influence us? Who can we humble ourselves to serve? Who that may have even betrayed us and we could love on this Holy Week and beyond?

Kelly Day  2:49

Let's pray. Dear Lord our father, you are the King of Kings, majesty, almighty and all powerful. Lord Jesus, you are also our friend and you are humble. You came as a servant. As your disciples, Lord I pray that you help us follow your example of true love to all. We need your help as we are proud people. We need your Holy Spirit to instruct us on what it looks like practically in our own lives, with the lovely and less lovely people around us. Thank you Lord, for coming to this earth to love and serve and ultimately die to save us from our own sin. We praise the Lord, in Christ's name alone. Amen.
